Cruising may not be the best way to experience a new country, yet it does have it's benefits: excellent meals; bottomless beverages; some excellent floor shows; and plenty of opportunities to relax.

A large caffè latte please, nothing to eat at the moment, I'll have a cocktail later.

On the boat last night. We enjoyed the floorshow at one of the bars with our after-dinner cocktails.

Some of the Ship's full-time entertainment crew, who provide a chorus and support guest entertainers.
In addition there are ship musicians and singers

Thus primed, after our wine at dinner and a couple of piña coladas, we went onto the dance floor ourselves. Trad rock. Nice to have a dance occasionally.   [Facebook comment: Hermione Inglesby French: where's the video of you two dancing xx  Reply: Richard McKie: that one was seized by Security.]

Greece and Türkiye 2024

In May 2024 Wendy and I travelled to Europe and after a string of flights landed in Berlin. By now we are quite familiar with that city and caught public transport to Emily and Guido's apartment to be greeted by our grandchildren and their parents.  I have previously reported on their family, so, suffice it to say, we had a very pleasant stay and even got out to their country place again.

From Berlin we flew to Greece and had an initial few days in Athens, before returning to Berlin, then back to Greece, a week later, to join a cruise of the Greek islands and Türkiye (just one port).

At the end of the cruise we spent a self-guided week on Crete. We finished our European trip with a week in Bulgaria, followed by a week in the UK, before flying back to Sydney.

The Writer

The fellow sitting beside me slammed his book closed and sat looking pensive.

The bus was approaching Cremorne junction.  I like the M30.  It starts where I get on so I’m assured of a seat and it goes all the way to Sydenham in the inner West, past Sydney University.  Part of the trip is particularly scenic, approaching and crossing the Harbour Bridge.  We’d be in The City soon.

My fellow passenger sat there just staring blankly into space.  I was intrigued.   So I asked what he had been reading that evoked such deep thought.  He smiled broadly, aroused from his reverie.  “Oh it’s just Inferno the latest Dan Brown,” he said.

The Last Carbon Taxer

- a Recent Wall Street Journal article

A recent wall street journal article 'The Last Carbon Taxer' has 'gone viral' and is now making the email rounds  click here...  to see a copy on this site.  The following comments are also interesting; reflecting both sides of the present debate in Australia.

As the subject article points out, contrary to present assertions, a domestic carbon tax in Australia will neither do much to reduce the carbon impact on world climate, if implemented, nor make a significant contribution, if not implemented.
