Our next overnight stop, chosen as a suitable waypoint before Ephesus, was Fethiye, another yachty hangout.

After a good fast expressway the traffic in Fethiye itself came to a standstill. We could have walked the last four kilometres to the 'Alesta Yacht Hotel' more quickly.

Wendy was more enamoured of the town than I was. It's quite modern and the town centre is more like a giant shopping mall than a village. But the hotel, adjacent to and overlooking the Marina, is excellent and a good choice for an overnight stop with a good breakfast.

The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a communist country, like China to the North and Vietnam with which it shares its Eastern border.

And like the bordering communist countries, the government has embraced limited private ownership and free market capitalism, in theory. But there remain powerful vested interests, and residual pockets of political power, particularly in the agricultural sector, and corruption is a significant issue.

During the past decade tourism has become an important source of income and is now generating around a third of the Nation's domestic product. Tourism is centred on Luang Prabang and to a lesser extent the Plane of Jars and the capital, Vientiane.

Announcing Leander

Marvellous. Emily, my eldest daughter, has given birth to my first natural Grandchild (I have three step-grandchildren). She and Guido have named him Leander. Mother and child are well.

The Origin of Life - according to God

Back in April 2013 I had another visit from our neighbourhood Jehovah's Witnesses, a pretty young woman and her husband, recently married. Like Daniel (mentioned elsewhere on this website) before them, they had brought copies of The Watchtower and Awake; which I agreed to read if they were prepared to read my paper: The Prospect of Eternal Life.

I keep a couple of copies of The Prospect of Eternal Life for just such occasions and have also given a copy to the local Anglican minister and to various other active proselytisers in the area; with similar conditions. Of course I know it will not change their position but I do like to have the debate and amazingly so do they; it beats the usual reception they get; and they get some practice in trying to convert un-believers.
