At the end of January 2026, Wendy and I embarked on our first trip for the year. This concluded with a few days in Dubai.

On Feb 28, just three weeks after we left Dubai, Bibi Netanyahu, in cahoots with Donald Trump, attacked Iran, annihilating the Ayatollah and his entire cabinet in one foul swoop. As 'The Weekly', TV program remarked: "When you've ended eight wars (as Trump repeatedly claims), you get a ninth one free".

Predictably, Iran immediately lashed out in retaliation, sending a missile into a hotel in Dubai. Apparently, United States personnel were billeted in that hotel. They must have been senior people as it is considerably up-market from the one we'd used, around the corner from the 'InsuranceMarket' METRO stop.

Travel

Greece and Türkiye 2024

In May 2024 Wendy and I travelled to Europe and after a string of flights landed in Berlin. By now we are quite familiar with that city and caught public transport to Emily and Guido's apartment to be greeted by our grandchildren and their parents. I have previously reported on their family, so, suffice it to say, we had a very pleasant stay and even got out to their country place again.

From Berlin we flew to Greece and had an initial few days in Athens, before returning to Berlin, then back to Greece, a week later, to join a cruise of the Greek islands and Türkiye (just one port).

At the end of the cruise we spent a self-guided week on Crete. We finished our European trip with a week in Bulgaria, followed by a week in the UK, before flying back to Sydney.

A Radio National discussion (May 29 2015) stated that statistically girls outperform boys academically and referenced research suggesting that this has something to do with working parents:

Provocative new research suggests that the outcomes for girls and boys can be different when parents go back to work, in particular mothers.

The Transit of Venus

On Wednesday 6th June, 2012 in Eastern Australia and New Zealand (as well Pacific islands across to Alaska) Venus was seen to pass between the Earth and the Sun; appearing as a small circular spot crossing the sun’s disc; for around six and a half hours.

This is a very rare astronomical event that has been the cause of great change to our world.

This is not because, as the astrologers would have it, that human events are governed or predicted by the disposition of the stars or planets. It is because the event has served to significantly advance scientific knowledge and our understanding of the Universe.
