Jobs in the future

Businesses based on skill, innovation or design rely on unknowable yet to be discovered, created or revealed proprietary intellectual property. These yet to be realised opportunities for product development and production will result in a very dynamic and fast developing industry; particularly in the entertainment and communications areas. Many new transformative and service businesses will support new opportunities brought about by the ongoing information and communications revolution.

Future transformative businesses will benefit from new channels for: reaching their customers and promoting their products and services; identifying new methods processes materials and production equipment; tighter supply chain integration and inventory management leading to leaner manufacturing; online access to expertise anywhere in the world; improved customer feedback, fault detection and product improvement; and improved distribution and delivery tracking.

Travel

China

I first visited China in November 1986. I was representing the New South Wales Government on a multinational mission to our Sister State Guangdong. My photo taken for the trip is still in the State archive [click here]. The theme was regional and small business development. The group heard presentations from Chinese bureaucrats and visited a number of factories in rural and industrial areas in Southern China. It was clear then that China was developing at a very fast rate economically.

Body in River

Monday

The body of a man was found floating in the Iguazú river this morning by a tourist boat. Mary (name withheld) said it was terrible. "We were just approaching the falls when the body appeared bobbing in the foam directly in front of us. We almost ran over it. The driver swerved and circled back and the crew pulled him in. The poor man must have fallen - or perhaps he jumped?"

The body was discovered near the Brazilian side but was taken back to Argentina. Police are investigating and have not yet released details of the man's identity...

Iguazú Herald

Everywhere we look there's falling water. Down the track to the right is a lookout. Over the other side of the gorge is Brazil, where the cliff faces are covered by maybe a kilometre of falling curtains of white, windswept water. Here and there the curtains hang in gaps or are pushed aside by clumps of trees and bushes, like stagehands peeking out into a theatre before the performance.

This illustration shows the two principal categories of Carbon Capture and Storage (Carbon Sequestration) - methods of disposing of carbon dioxide (CO₂₎ so that it doesn't enter the atmosphere. Sequestering it underground is known as Geosequestration while artificially accelerating natural biological absorption is Biosequestration.

There is a third alternative of deep ocean sequestration but this is highly problematic as one of the adverse impacts of rising CO₂ is ocean acidification - already impacting fisheries.

This paper examines both Geosequestration and Biosequestration and concludes that while Biosequestration has longer term potential Geosequestration on sufficient scale to make a difference is impractical.
